Here at Hawks Prairie Veterinary Hospital we treat birds and small mammals including, but not limited to, rabbits, ferrets, rodents, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Dr. Amy Smith has been a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians for 9 years and has worked with birds and exotic pets during and after veterinary school. Her assistant, Meg, also has worked with birds and exotic animals as a zookeeper and avian rehabilitator

The bird species we see include parrots, perching or song birds like canaries and finches, poultry, and water fowl. Upon your arrival you will fill out the avian history form, or you may fill this form out prior to your visit and bring it with you. During your first avian visit Dr. Smith and Meg will discuss all aspects of husbandry along with performing the physical exam. We will address any questions and concerns you may have and discuss a diagnostic and treatment plan should your bird be ill.

We also provide avian grooming services. Most parrots require wing and nail trims and some require beak trims. These services will be tailored to your specific birds needs.

Guinea Pig and Chinchilla

In additon to avian patients, we see small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas and small rodents. On the first visit we discuss husbandry and perform a physical exam. We will address all your questions and provide you with recommendations and treatment options. We also perform grooming such as nail trims and in some cases tooth trims.
