Hawks Prairie Veterinary Hospital

Small Animal/Avian/Pocket Pets

Meet Our Staff

Kim Martin, DVM
Veterinarian

Dr. Kim Martin graduated from Washington State University Veterinary School in 1997. She has spent the last 10 years growing our sister clinic, Steamboat Animal Hospital in Olympia, and is now excited to bring her expertise to our new hospital at Hawks Prairie.

Her special interests include chemotherapy, greyhound medicine, and surgery. Her latest accomplishment; certification in acupuncture through the CSU program.

At home, Dr. Martin is surrounded by a large "family" of two legged, three legged, and four legged loved ones! In addition to her husband and two children, she shares her home with two 14 year old cats "Nairobi" and "Kazuri". Each pets' Swahili name reveals a bit about their struggles prior to finding their way into Dr. Martin's life!

Most of Dr. Martin's time away from work is spent with her family. She is an avid reader and scrapbooker and somehow found the time to complete the Breast Cancer 3 Day event in the fall of 2005 and 2007!

Lisa Ankerstjerne, DVM
Veterinarian

Dr. "Lisa" graduated from Iowa State University in 2007. She enjoys working with small animals, some exotics, and pocket pets. She likes to take her time with clients and help educate and answer questions regarding their pets and their pets' needs.

Alena Cowell, DVM
Veterinarian

Dr. Alena Cowell is a 1997 graduate of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and moved to the Pacific Northwest from her home state of Indiana right after graduation. Her family moved to Olympia in 2001 and couldn't be happier! Dr. Cowell spent her first 8 years working at Steamboat Animal Hospital, then joined Kim Martin at Hawks in the Fall of 2008.

In addition to her two-legged family, Dr. Cowell has a sweet  cat named Tater, a bouncing Chihuahua named Gunner, and a laser pen-loving Harrier Mix called Daisy.

Dr. Cowell's area of special interest is veterinary dentistry. She feels that good preventative dental care is so important to the overall good health of your pet. She is a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society, and enjoys the challenges that this field provides. She routinely performs root canals, fillings, and has done the occasional orthodontic procedure.

In her free time (???), she's very active in 4-H. She's a co-leader of the Thurston County 4-H Veterinary Science Club, which is designed for teenagers with a strong interest in the veterinary profession. She's also leader for a community 4-H club for younger kids. She grew up with 4-H as an important part of her life, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute as an adult to future generations.

Dr. Cowell looks forward to getting to know you and thanks you for the opportunity to provide compassionate care to your four-legged family members.

Amy Smith, DVM
Veterinarian

Dr. Amy Smith grew up in Southern California but always loved the Pacific Northwest and hoped to some day relocate there. California is where she met and married her husband Allen. She then attended Oklahoma State University's School of Veterinary Medicine. This is where she became interested in avian and exotic animal medicine. While attending veterinary school she worked in the only exclusively avian and exotic animal hospital in Oklahoma in addition to working with zoo animals, dogs, cats, and various avian and exotic animal veterinarians. She graduated from veterinary school in 2002 and has lived in the Pacific Northwest ever since. She and her husband have two cats, Peanut and Little Sweetheart, a small feisty parrot named Kiwi, and a White's tree frog.
